Extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA)
Extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA), sometimes also called hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), is the scientific name for what is commonly known as pigeon fancier's lung. It is a form of allergic reaction that develops from frequently inhaling pigeon proteins. These proteins are released from the birds' feathers and droppings and cause inflammation in the alveoli of the lungs. These alveoli often recover on their own, but the body's ability to repair itself is not unlimited. Through long-term and frequent exposure, lung tissue can be irreversibly damaged and scar tissue will form. As a result, lung capacity decreases, leading to consequences such as shortness of breath, dry coughing fits and a reduced exertion capacity.
How do you prevent pigeon fancier's lung from developing?
Prevention is better than cure, and that applies to this condition too. There are a number of things that contribute to practising pigeon racing safely:
- Always wear a high-quality mouth and nose mask
- A separate set of clothing and shoes for the pigeon loft
- Keep the loft dust-free by mopping regularly
- Wash your hands after every visit to the loft
- Ensure good ventilation in the loft
